1. Menurut Weygandt, Kieso, dan Kimmel
Bagi mereka Akuntansi merupakan sebuah bagian sistem informasi yang mengidentifikasi sebuah catatan dan mengkomunikasikan insiden ekonomi pada suatu organisasi terhadap pengguna yang berkepentingan”.
2. Sunyanto (1999)
Baginya akuntansi adalah suatu tahapan proses pengumpulan, pengidentifikasian, mencatat, penggolongan, peringkasan serta penyajian atau laporan dari banyaknya transaksi keuangan serta penafsiran hasilnya guna pengambilan keputusan.
3. Warren dkk (2005:10)
Secara umum, akuntansi adalah sistem informasi yang menghasilkan laporan kepada pihak-pihak yang memiliki sebuah aktivitas ekonomi serta kondisi perusahaan.
4. Suparwoto L (1990 : 2)
Baginya akuntansi sebagai sebuah teknik untuk mengukur serta mengelola transaksi keuangan dan memberikan hasil pengelolaan dalam bentuk informasi kepada pihak-pihak internal maupun eksternal perusahaan. Pihak eksternal maksudnya adalah terdiri dari investor, kreditur pemerintah, serikat buruh dan lain-lain.
5. Soemarsono S.R (2004)
Definisi akuntansi atau accounting menurutnya adalah suatu proses mengidentifikasikan, mengukur dan juga melaporkan informasi ekonomi untuk memungkinkan adanya penilaian serta keputusan yang jelas dan tegas bagi mereka yang menggunakan informasi tersebut.
6. S. Munawir (2005)
Baginya akuntansi adalah sebuah seni daripada pencatatan, penggolongan dan peringkasan terhadap sebuah peristiwa yang setidak-tidaknya sebagian sifatnya keuangan dengan cara yang secepat-cepatnya dan petunjuk atau dinyatakan dengan uang, dan juga penafsiran yang timbul dari padanya.
7. Paul Grady
Akuntansi adalah bagian tubuh dari ilmu pengetahuan serta fungsi organisasi secara sistematis, autentik & original dalam mencatat, mengklasifikasi, memproses, menulis ikhtisar, menganalisa, dan juga menginterpretasi semua transaksi dan kejadian serta karakters keuangan yang terjadi dalam operasional entitas accounting dengan tujuan menyediakan informasi yang berarti dibutuhkan manajemen sebagai laporan dan pertanggungjawaban atas kepercayaan yang diterimanya.
8. Winarno (2006)
Akuntansi adalah sebuah proses pencatatan transaksi keuangan dan mengolah data transaksi dan menyajikan sebuah informasi terhadap pihak-pihak yang berhak dan berkepentingan.
9. Bastian dan Suharjono (2006)
Dalam bukunya, Committee on Terminology of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Bastian dan Suharjono (2006), pengertian akuntansi adalah seni mencatat, menggolongkan, dan mengikhtisarkan transaksi serta peristiwa yang bersifat keuangan dengan cara yang bermakna juga dalam satuan uang serta menginvestasikan hasilnya.

Tujuan Akuntansi
Pada dasarnya tujuan akuntansi adalah untuk melakukan pencatatan, mengumpulkan serta melaporkan informasi terkait keuangan, posisi keuangan, dan arus kas dalam sebuah bisnis.

Proses dalam Akuntansi
Seperti yng telah dipaparkan di atas bahwa dalam sebuah akuntansi adalah proses yang berkaitan dengan keuangan apapun yang terjadi dalam bisnis atau organisasi.
Akuntansi memiliki sebuah proses, yang terdiri dari mencatat, meringkas, menganalisa, dan melaporkan data. Berikut adalah penjelasan proses tersebut:
1. Mencatat
Proses terpenting dalam proses akuntansi adalah pencatatan transaksi yang terjadi dalam bisnis. Proses ini, umumnya dikenal sebagai pembukuan, melibatkan pencatatan dan memasukkan transaksi ke dalam pembukuan.
Dalam sebuah proses akuntansi, akuntansi biasanya dilakukan untuk tujuan akuntansi rinci dan merupakan laporan untuk menyajikan data dalam bentuk laporan keuangan akhir.
2. Meringkas
Secara umum, untuk sebuah data mentah adalah hasil pencatatan transaksi dan dianggap tidak terlalu penting. Data mentah ini tidak terlalu berpengaruh pada proses pengambilan keputusan.
Namun, peran penting seorang akuntan untuk menggunakan data mentah, mengelompokkan menjadi beberapa kategori, serta menerjemahkannya. Sehingga, proses yang biasa terjadi adalah mencatat transaksi, lalu meringkasnya.
3. Melaporkan

Kegiatannya terdiri dari pencatatan kegiatan finansial, bertujuan untuk dapat menyajikan laporan keuangan. Meliputi neraca, laporan laba rugi serta laporan perubahan modal atau laporan laba ditahan selama jangka waktu tertentu.
