1. Lembaga Sosial Berdasarkan Nilainya
Lembaga sosial berdasarkan kriteria nilainya dapat dibedakan menjadi dua yaitu primer dan sekunder.
a. Lembaga Sosial Primer atau Basic Social Institutions
Lembaga sosial primer merupakan lemabaga sosial yang bersifat mendasar dan pokok. Utamanya lembaga sosial primer ini untuk mengatur kehidupan bermasyarakat karena memiliki kaidah sosial yang tinggi untuk mengatur hubungan masyarakat.
Keadilan sosial pada lembaga sosial primer ini ada di lingkungan masyarakat dan dibagi menjadi empat sesuai dengan kaidahnya.
- Kaidah Agama, mengatur hubungan antar individu serta Tuhan berdasarkan pada seluruh ajaran serta larangan Tuhan untuk membentuk perilaku umat agar berguna bagi sesama.
- Kaidah Kesusilaan, kaidah ini berasal dari dalam individu sendiri. Apabila proses internalisasi maupun nilai dan norma berhasil secara baik dan maksimal, maka individu tersebut dapat menjalankan kaidah kesusilaan dalam masyarakat. Contohnya seperti bersikap jujur, bertanggung jawab serta disiplin.
- Kaidah Kesopanan, merupakan kaidah yang memiliki hubungan dengan sosialisasi serta interaksi yang terbentuk melalui hubungan sosial yang terjadi di lingkungan masyarakat. Contohnya seperti sikap saling menghormati.
- Kaidah hukum, merupakan perangkat peraturan yang dibuat oleh pihak berwenang serta bersifat tertulis dan memaksa warga negaranya untuk melaksanakan tata tertib yang telah tercantum pada hukum.
Contoh lembaga sosial primer dalam masyarakat adalah seperti lembaga keluarga, lembaga pendidikan, lembaga hukum, lembaga ekonomi, lembaga agama serta lembaga kesehatan.
b. Lembaga Sosial Sekunder atau Subsidiary Social Institutions
Tipe lembaga sosial sekunder berarti lembaga sosial ini bersifat sekunder, nilai dari lembaga sosial ini dianggap tidak penting oleh sebagian masyarakat. Lembaga sosial sekunder perlu dijalankan secara kompak oleh seluruh lapisan masyarakat, karena apabila tidak dijalankan dan tidak dipenuhi maka lembaga sosial sekunder ini tidak akan memberikan pengaruh yang besar pada kehidupan bermasyarakat.
Namun sebaliknya, apabila lembaga sosial sekunder dijakanlah dan dipenuhi maka lembaga ini hanya dianggap sebagai penambah atau nilai lebih saja. Berdasarkan konteks ruang maupun waktu tidak menutup kemungkinan bahwa masyarakat akan menganggap lembaga sosial sekunder sebagai suatu kebutuhan primer menurut mereka. Contoh dari lembaga sosial sekunder adalah lembaga pariwisata.
Lembaga sosial primer dapat berubah seiring waktu menjadi lembaga sosial sekunder karena perubahan pola pikir pada masyarakat yang terus berkembang. Contohnya seperti masyarakat tradisional yang menganggap bahwa pendidikan formal tidak terlalu penting.
Anggapan tersebut akan menjadikan lembaga pendidikan sebagai lembaga sosial primer berubah menjadi lembaga sosial sekunder bagi masyarakat tradisional yang menganggap bahwa pendidikan formal tidak terlalu penting.
2. Lembaga Sosial berdasarkan Perkembangannya
Berdasarkan perkembangan lembaga sosial, berikut adalah tipe-tipe lembaga sosial yang dibedakan menjadi dua.
a. Crescive Social Institutions
Crescive social institutions merupakan lembaga sosial yang tidak sengaja tumbuh serta berkembang dalam masyarakat. Lembaga sosial ini terbentuk berdasarkan pola perilaku masyarakat yang telah mengalami integrasi kuat dalam kehidupan pada anggota masyarakat.

Contohnya seperti lembaga ekonomi yang memiliki fungsi untuk mengatur berbagai bentuk kegiatan seperti kegiatan produksi dan konsumsi dalam masyarakat.
3. Berdasarkan Sudut Penerimaan oleh Masyarakat
a. Approved atau Social Sanctioned Institutions
Approve social sanctioned institutions merupakan lembaga sosial yang diterima dan diakui keberadaannya oleh masyarakat setempat. Contohnya adalah lembaga kesehatan, lembaga transportasi serta lembaga perdagangan.
b. Unsanctioned Social Institutions
Lembaga sosial unsanctioned merupakan kebalikannya dari approved. Lembaga sosial unsanctioned ini tidak diakui keberadaannya oleh masyarakat karena dianggap meresahkan anggota masyarakat. Contohnya seperti jaringan terorisme atau kelompok yang mengancam masyarakat.

5. Lembaga Sosial berdasarkan Penyebarannya
a. General Social Institutions
merupakan lembaga sosial yang ada dalam hampir seluruh masyarakat sehingga sifatnya adalah universal atau menyeluruh. Lembaga ini dapat diterima oleh masyarakat luas dan memiliki nilai tinggi untuk dapat memenuhi kebutuhan seluruh elemen dalam masyarakat. Contohnya seperti lembaga agama.
b. Restricted Social Institutions
Lembaga sosial restricted ini terbentuk berdasarkan kepentingan kelompok, kelas maupun golongan tertentu yang kemudian dapat membangun suatu ciri khas serta tidak dapat diterapkan pada golongan, kelompok, maupun kelas lain.
